AfterEvery paver project begins with the right foundation — excavation, base prep, and drainage — so your installation looks great and stays level for years to come.
Custom paver patios in a range of sizes, shapes, and materials. We excavate to proper depth, install a compacted gravel base, and lay pavers with precision for a flat, durable surface.
Front entry walkways, backyard paths, and driveway connectors — built with proper slope for drainage and edged to keep pavers locked in place through freeze-thaw cycles.
Paver steps, landings, and grade transitions that tie your patio or walkway into the rest of your yard. Safe, clean lines, and built to last through heavy foot traffic.
Decorative paver borders, soldier course edging, and contrasting color bands that give your installation a finished, professional look and help define your outdoor space.
The most important part of any paver job is what happens before the first stone goes down. We dig to the correct depth, remove organics, compact the sub-base, and install gravel to spec.
Proper slope and edge drainage keep water from pooling on your patio or undercutting your base. We design drainage into every project from day one.
Poured concrete cracks. Wood rots. Pavers flex slightly with the ground — meaning when Massachusetts frost pushes up a section, you can reset individual pieces instead of jackhammering a slab. A properly installed paver patio or walkway can last 25–30+ years with minimal maintenance.
The key word is properly installed. That means the right excavation depth, compacted gravel base, bedding sand, and edge restraints — all things we get right every time.

The most important thing to ask about is base prep — not the paver brand or pattern. Ask how deep they excavate, what base material they use, and how they handle drainage. A contractor who can't answer those questions clearly is a red flag. Beyond that, look for someone with actual excavation experience (not just a landscaper who lays pavers on the side), check that they're insured, and ask to see past work. At Lavallee Landscaping, we come from an excavation and site work background, which means we take base prep as seriously as the finished surface.
In Massachusetts, we excavate 8–12 inches for paver patios and walkways. That depth accounts for the freeze-thaw cycle here — if the base isn't deep enough, frost will push the pavers up unevenly. The exact depth depends on the soil conditions and whether we're hitting any unstable material, but we never cut corners on this step.
We use either ¾" Dense Grade (processed gravel) or ¾" crushed stone with fabric, depending on the site conditions. Dense Grade compacts tightly and creates a very stable base. On sites with poor drainage or soft subsoil, we'll lay landscape fabric first to prevent base material from mixing with the native soil over time. Both methods, done right, give you a solid, long-lasting foundation.
Yes — drainage is non-negotiable. Every paver surface we install is sloped slightly (typically ¼" per foot) so water runs away from the house and doesn't pool. On certain sites we also install edge drains or channel drains where runoff is a bigger concern. Water sitting under or on top of your patio is the #1 cause of base failure and paver movement over time.
Absolutely. Polymeric sand is a jointing sand mixed with a binding agent that hardens when activated with water. It locks the pavers together, dramatically reduces weed growth in the joints, resists washout from rain, and helps prevent ants and insects from nesting in the gaps. Regular sand washes out quickly and leaves your joints open to weeds and shifting. Poly sand is a small added cost that makes a big difference in how long your patio looks great and stays stable.
Most residential paver patios and walkways take 2–5 days from start to finish. Larger projects with steps, walls, or drainage work may take a bit longer. We'll give you a clear timeline with your estimate so you know what to expect.
We work with concrete pavers (including Blu 60 and similar products), natural stone, and tumbled pavers in a variety of colors and patterns. During your estimate, we can walk through options that fit your style and budget.
Yes — when they're installed correctly. The reason pavers outperform poured concrete in New England is that individual pieces can shift slightly without cracking. If frost does push up a section, it's easy to re-level. The key is a properly compacted base and good drainage so water isn't sitting below the surface when it freezes.
Paver patio costs in Massachusetts generally range from $15–$30+ per square foot installed, depending on the size of the project, the paver material chosen, site access, and how much excavation is needed. The best way to get an accurate number is a free on-site estimate — contact us and we'll come take a look.
Not much. Occasional joint sand replenishment every few years, pulling any weeds that sprout in the joints, and keeping debris off the surface is typically all that's needed. If any pavers do shift over time, they can usually be re-set quickly without disturbing the rest of the patio.
