From small garden-level block walls to large hillside retention structures, we handle every aspect — excavation, drainage backfill, base compaction, and block or stone placement built to handle New England's freeze-thaw cycles.
Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar interlocking block systems built to engineered specs. Ideal for residential terracing, driveway edges, and garden walls — clean lines, long-lasting, no mortar required.
Dry-laid fieldstone and granite retaining walls that blend into the New England landscape. Built with the same craftsmanship as the stone walls that have stood in this region for generations.
Convert steep, unusable slopes into level terraced areas for gardens, lawn, or hardscaping. Multiple wall tiers with proper drainage between each level keep everything stable season after season.
Every retaining wall we build includes proper drainage — 3/4" stone backfill, filter fabric, and weep holes or drain pipe where needed. Water management behind the wall is what makes it last.
Walls along driveway edges or near foundations that hold back hillsides and prevent erosion from undercutting your property. Properly footed below frost depth for stability year-round.
Shorter decorative retaining walls that define planting beds, frame patios, and add visual structure to the yard. We match materials and height to what fits the property and your budget.
Real retaining wall projects completed in Spencer, MA and throughout Worcester County.

Full retaining wall build — excavated base, compacted gravel, 3/4" stone drainage backfill, and wall block set course by course.

Base course set, drainage stone being packed in behind the wall before continuing up.

Completed wall with cap block, loam and seed on disturbed areas, site cleaned up.
A retaining wall that isn't built right won't last — and in New England, "not built right" usually means the base wasn't deep enough, the drainage wasn't done, or the wall wasn't stepped back properly. We see these failures all the time. We build walls the way they should be: compacted base below frost depth, drainage stone packed tight behind each course, and block or stone set with the right batter angle.
Whether you're dealing with an eroding hillside, a sloped yard that's wasting space, or a failing old wall that needs replacement, we'll walk the site with you, explain what needs to happen, and give you a straight estimate with no surprises.

Footed below frost depth so the wall doesn't heave, lean, or shift through winter
Drainage Built In
Stone backfill and weep holes prevent hydrostatic pressure from pushing the wall over
Usable Yard Space
Turn steep, eroding slopes into flat, functional areas for lawn, gardens, or hardscaping
Curb Appeal
A well-built wall adds structure and visual definition that improves the whole property
We walk the site, assess slope, soil, and drainage conditions, and give you a clear estimate — materials, labor, and timeline all included.
We excavate to below frost depth, level and compact a crushed gravel base, and set the first course with the correct batter angle for the wall height.
Courses go up with drainage stone packed behind each lift. Filter fabric keeps soil out of the stone. Cap block or top course finishes the wall clean.
Top of wall area is graded, disturbed lawn areas are loamed and seeded, and we haul off all excess material. You get a clean finished site.
Based in Spencer, MA, we build retaining walls throughout a 25-mile radius. If you're in Central Massachusetts and dealing with an eroding slope or a failing wall, we can help.

In New England the base course needs to sit below the frost line — typically 12–18 inches below finished grade for residential walls. We excavate, compact a 6-inch gravel base, and set the first course level and buried. This is the step most DIY walls skip, and it's why they lean and fail after a few winters.
Both work well when built correctly. Segmental block walls (Allan Block, Versa-Lok, etc.) are faster to build, very consistent looking, and engineered for specific heights and load conditions. Natural stone walls have a more traditional New England character and can be stunning when done right — but they take more time and skill. We'll recommend what makes the most sense for your site and budget.
Always. A wall with no drainage behind it will have water pressure building up every time it rains or snow melts — that's hydrostatic pressure, and it will eventually push the wall over no matter how well it's built. We install 3/4" crushed stone backfill, filter fabric, and weep holes or drain pipe on every retaining wall we build.
Yes — wall replacements are a large part of our work. Old walls fail for predictable reasons: no proper base, no drainage, or just old age. We demo the existing wall, haul off the material, and rebuild from scratch with a proper base and drainage. If the old wall is still structurally sound, sometimes we can reface or reinforce it instead — we'll assess it during the estimate.
Yes. We coordinate all material sourcing and delivery as part of the project — block, drainage stone, filter fabric, and cap. You don't need to source anything yourself. We also offer standalone material delivery for customers who want to do their own work. Visit our Material Delivery page for details.
