Correcting a previous contractor's backyard regrading — with only 10 inches of elevation change across 120 feet — using laser measurements, digital grade planning, and our own custom-built grading software.
Project Overview
A previous contractor had rushed through a backyard regrading project in Auburn, leaving water flowing toward the home's foundation and bulkhead instead of away from it. We were brought in to correct the existing grades and redirect that surface water the right way.
The challenge: just 10 inches of available elevation change across 120 feet of yard. With that little pitch to work with, there was virtually no room for error. A half-inch mistake in one section could throw off the drainage pattern across the entire property.
Rather than relying on visual estimates or guesswork, we combined laser measurements with our own custom-built grading software to calculate exactly how the yard needed to be reshaped — mapping existing conditions, establishing proposed elevations, and planning water flow at every 10-foot interval before excavation ever started.
We excavated and removed approximately 80 cubic yards of material, replaced the rocky fill around the bulkhead with dense graded aggregate, Harley raked the compacted subsoil, and left the property ready for lawn restoration.
How We Planned It
Before any dirt moved, we developed a complete digital grading blueprint using software built entirely in-house. The software calculated required excavation quantities, elevation differences, and proposed finished grades at every 10-foot interval across the yard — giving us precise elevation targets throughout the dig rather than relying on visual estimates.
