An old timber wall under this deck was replaced with a segmental block retaining wall. We dug out the slope, built the wall on a compacted base with drainage stone and geogrid behind it, and finished the space with a level stone pad.
Project Overview
The slope under this Spencer home's deck was held back by an old landscape timber wall staked in place. The space in front of it wasn't much use. The homeowner wanted a permanent wall and a level area under the deck.
We pulled out the timbers and dug the slope back to make room for the new wall and a flat pad. The cut soil face was lined with filter fabric so dirt can't wash into the drainage stone. Then we compacted a gravel base and leveled the first course of block.
The block was set course by course with locking pins, and the hollow cores and the space behind the wall were filled with drainage stone. Geogrid was laid between courses and run back into the fill to tie the wall into the slope.
The finished wall steps down along its length and has a lower return wall on the side, all topped with cap block. A compacted stone pad in front gives the homeowner a clean, level, usable space under the deck.
